Hey gang,
At our last Gathering the consensus seemed to be that we’d like to do a couple of local dive trips this summer. I apologize for not getting this out to you sooner, but somehow with all that’s been happening in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City the last few weeks, it didn’t seem to be a high priority. Even now, I know there are a number of you who have lost homes and possessions due to the flooding. Please let your friends at the Gathering know what we can do to help you recover.
None the less, we will be doing several day-long dive trips this summer. The first is scheduled for Sunday, July 20th at Haigh Quarry in Kankakee, Illinois. this is the date for the annual Jim Haigh Memorial Dive. Haigh Quarry is a very pretty park-like setting with clear water and lots of fish! The Memorial Dive day features door prizes, raffles, live music and great fun! Proceeds from the day will go to benefit the Shed Aquarium Volunteer Diver Equipment Maintenance Program.
Air fills will be free for the day. We will plan to meet at the quarry at 11:00 on Sunday. Please let me know if you are planning to come and if you would like me to bring anything for you.
On Saturday, August 9th, we will be heading to Pearl Lake in South Beloit, Illinois. Pearl is a former sand pit that has found new life as a fun dive spot in northern Illinois, just across the border from Beloit, Wisconsin. Pearl features many underwater attractions, including a submarine, school bus, airplane, boats and plenty of fish! The Pearl Lake complex includes a beach and swimming area, so there is plenty of fun even for the non-divers in the family. We’ll plan to meet at Pearl around 11:00 on the 9th. Again, if you’d like me to bring air or gear for you, please let me know.
Hope to see you all then!
Jim
